Through Emme’s Eyes is a special fund within Brittany’s Hope that provides critical support for children who are visually impaired or have other special needs—just like Emme.
Emme’s journey began in a small orphanage outside of Ho Chi Minh City, South Viet Nam. She was 18 months old and weighed only 11 pounds. The Abel family was in the process of adopting another daughter when they saw Emme, lying quietly in a crib in the corner of the room. Fragile and without much hope, she instantly captured their hearts. They knew she needed a home—and they became hers.
Though her start in life was uncertain, Emme quickly became the heart of the Abel family. She was lovingly nurtured, hand-fed for five years, and surrounded by their unwavering support. Despite her visual impairment, Emme amazed everyone with her resilience. With the help of multiple surgeries and specialized equipment and toys, she gained confidence, independence, and joy.
Emily’s legacy did not end with her passing. As an organ donor, she gave the gift of life to others. Today, her spirit continues to shine Through Emme’s Eyes—bringing hope, healing, and empowerment to children in need. As David reflected upon Emme’s many wise statements he shared a story: Emme: ‘I want to see a painted turtle from the pond.’ Dad: ’That’s impossible, I can’t catch one. They’re too fast.” Emme: ‘I’m going to pray and ask God.’ Dad finds a live, painted turtle stuck in the grass at the pond and puts it in Emme’s hand for her to touch and see. Emme: You see, Dad, you just need to have faith. God answers prayers.’
